About

The Great Adventure Lab is an after-school science enrichment program that runs in 50+ schools in the D.C. area. We’ve taught thousands of kids how to write their first robotics programs or video game programs (or both!). We also teach science, engineering, electronics...and more! We do it all with SMALL class sizes with an adult to student ratio of 6:1. Our goal is to make science, technology, engineering, and mathematics irresistibly FUN for the next generation.

You can read all about our classes and birthday parties at http://thegreatadventurelab.com. The site includes plenty of photos and links to videos from our classes!

We are an LLC based in Silver Spring, MD. We are fully insured and our instructors have passed background checks including FBI and state fingerprinting.

Here are mini-descriptions of our Spring 2015 offerings at Cold Spring ES.  Please follow links for complete details, including photos!  Room numbers TBD. Instructor will send welcome email several days before class.

3D Design (NEW!)

Thu 3:10-4:10pm
Apr 16, 23, 30, May 7, 14, 21, 28

GRADES 3-5

Students may not repeat this class. Students must be in specified grade range.

Areas of Exploration: Design, Programming, Logic.

Course Structure and Fees: 2 instructors. Seven 60-min. meetings, once per week. $150 per student plus $30 materials fee per student. Min. 9 /max. 10 students.

During this seven week course, we will show students how to render ideas in three dimensions. We’ll learn how to turn planes into rectangular solids, circles into cylinders! We’ll rotate, extrude and more! After learning the basics, campers will sketch their ideas and use their new skills to render those ideas into their very own, 3-D, printable designs. Each child will take home a USB drive with their own designs, as well as instructions on where to get them printed.

The ability to turn ideas into real-life objects will thrill our students, but beware: they may come home asking for a 3-D printer of their own.

**Cancelled due to low enrolmlent**

Robo Challenge Machines

Tue 3:10-4:10pm
Apr 14, 21, 28, May 5, 12, 19, 26

GRADES 3–5 (3rd grade prerequisite: LEGO® Robotics)

Students may not repeat this class. Students must be in specified grade range.

Areas of Exploration: Robotics, Programming, Logic.

Course Structure and Fees: 1 instructor, 1 aide. Seven 60-min. meetings, once per week. $125 per student.  Min. 11 / max. 12 students.

Robo Challenge Machines is ideal for students who want more of a challenge than the LEGO® Robotics class offers. No previous robotics experience is required for 4-5th graders. Instead of working with step-by-step building directions and sample programs, we start each class with a programming challenge set by our instructors. We then use LEGO® robotics kits to design bots to go with our programs. We build catapults, crash-avoidance vehicles, hexbug nano catchers, and more!  Robo Challenge Machines and Contraptions can be taken in any order.

Lego Engineers

Wed 3:10-4:10pm
Apr 15, 22, 29, May 6, 13, 20, 27

GRADES 1–2

Students may not repeat this class. Students must be in specified grade range.

Areas of Exploration: Engineering, Simple Machines, Physics.  Course Structure and Fees: 1 instructor, 1 aide. Seven 60-min. meetings, once per week. $120 per student. Min. 11 / max. 12 students. Parent aide gets free tuition. See parent aide requirements here:  http://thegreatadventurelab.com/parent-aides/

Lego Engineers students learn and apply mechanical engineering concepts to create a wild amusement park ride, a go-cart, and, of course...a catapult! Students learn the physics behind levers, gears, pulleys, and other simple machines using LEGO® Education’s Simple Machines set.  Lego Engineers classes introduce a new project each week, and students are encouraged to improvise on their designs just like in our robotics classes!
